Lightweight match for large-format tile

First Installers Pass ACT Certification 

Five of the largest organizations representing tile contractors, installers and manufacturers are pleased to announce that eight industry professionals are the first to successfully pass the ACT certification program.  Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers— ACT—addresses four technically-challenging installation areas of current importance:  Large Format Tile Installation and Substrate Preparation, Mudwork, Shower Pans and Membranes.  A specific certification demonstrates the installer’s skill and knowledge in each of these four segments. The eight professional installers not only passed all four certifications, they did so under the watchful eye of thousands of attendees at Coverings, the leading tile and stone show in the United States.  Because the program was in the developmental phase when the show was held in Atlanta in April, they just recently completed the on-line written test that comprises twenty-five percent of the certification score.

Partners in the development initiative are:  Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF); Tile Contractors Association of America (TCAA), representing IUBAC signatory tile contractors; International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (IUBAC); International Masonry Institute (IMI), which provides professional and technical training for union masonry contractors, and National Tile Contractors Association, with membership open to all tile contracting companies.   Tile Council of North America (TCNA) manufacturer members companies are contributing to development of the modules and tests.

TEC® and Crossville® Create Approved Installation System for Large Format Thin Panels

Products from TEC® have been endorsed by Crossville for use with its Laminam® by Crossville® line of large thin porcelain panels. Crossville recently launched its line of large porcelain panels for wall and floor applications through an exclusive distributorship with Italian manufacturer Laminam S.p.A. The line features the first-ever large format slab with a thickness of as little as 3 millimeters. TEC® and Crossville have jointly developed Laminam® specific installation guidelines, as the revolutionary panels require different handling and installation techniques than traditional products.

Although large format thin panels have become increasingly popular, successful installation requires specific materials. TEC® offers a variety of setting materials for use with Laminam® by Crossville® – including surface preparation products, mortars, grouts and caulks. “Our goal is to educate contractors on the methods and products that will help them deliver high quality results,” says Tim Bolby, Executive Technical Services Director at Crossville. “Our recommendations, which include select TEC® products, specify the equipment, materials, handling, storage and installation methods to help contractors achieve success.”

12th Annual Tile of Spain Awards

Miami, FL September 2013- Tile of Spain, the international brand representing 125 ceramic tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER), is proud to launch the Twelfth Annual Tile of Spain Awards of Architecture and Interior Design. The Tile of Spain Awards aim to improve awareness and understanding of Spanish ceramic tile among architects and interior designers, and to promote its use by professionals. A total of nearly $50,000 will be awarded to winners across three categories; Architecture, Interior Design, and Degree Project aimed at students of Architecture. The jury may give two special mentions in each category as it considers the projects to be rewarded. Previous winning projects include The Institute for Higher Education Jaume I Project and the Catering School in a Former Abattoir by Sol 89. The main requirement to participate is that the projects use Spanish ceramic tiles. All projects must have been completed between January 2011 and October 2013. Registration is now open and the entry deadline is October 29, 2013. Each year, the jury for the Tile of Spain Awards is comprised of prominent Spanish and international professionals. Prestigious German architect Matthias Sauerbruch, one of 7 international architects bestowed with an AIA Honorary Fellowship in 2013 by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), will chair the jury. He will be joined by the architects João Luís Carrilho da Graça, Luca Molinari, Manuel Gallego, Ignacio García Pedrosa and Ramón Monfort; and the designer Tomás Alonso. Flaviker-Pi.Sa was back at Cersaie in Bologna with creative, new introductions. Portland 325, a free interpretation of restored industrial plaster developed in cooperation with Cesena-based firm Studio Archdesign, and Dakota, a wood-effect tile imbued with charm and a pioneering spirit, are the projects that herald next season’s trends. Cityline and Forward, the new complete collections showcased at Cersaie 2013, go beyond the mere reproduction of natural materials and instead reinterpret each individual element through the filter of cutting-edge technology. By drawing inspiration from a range of different materials to create highly eclectic products, these collections offer architects enormous creative freedom. The Cityline collection brings unique and original qualities to any project. Based on observations of iron sheets, the project brings together different contemporary surfaces. The linear graphic appearance emulates a variety of elements such as brushstrokes, unique marble veins and the chemical markings left by corrosion. The collection also features mosaics and decorative inserts, creating a sophisticated yet essential moodboard that fully meets the needs of contemporary architecture. As the name suggests, progress and movement are the concepts underpinning the Forward collection. Inspired by quartzite and slate, the collection captures the essence of these materials, meticulously re-elaborating them to create a pleasing harmony of colours and visual combinations. The result is a diverse and distinctive collection ideal for use in a multitude of living spaces including modern residential, commercial and outdoor applications.

The STAINMASTER® brand, one of the country’s leading brands of flooring, announces an expansion into tile and grouting products and Columbia’s Tile Center will be one of the initial retailers for these products

The STAINMASTER® brand, which in 1986 changed the carpet industry by offering a product with significant stain resistance, is launching another game changer in the flooring industry.   In a venture with The Tile Doctor out of Marietta, Georgia, the STAINMASTER® brand will be on a line of tile and grouting products which will assure an easy to clean, durable and stain resistant surface for tiles and grout. The original line includes 10 different designs, colors and shapes as well as a STAINMASTER™ grout additive product.

The Tile Center, considered a top flooring retailer in the southeast, is the first to offer these products in North America. Assisting in this introduction is HGTV’S Jodi Marks. Jodi’s claim is not only a popular personality for HGTV, but is also a University of South Carolina graduate. Jodi’s daughter is following in her mom’s footsteps and is currently a student at USC.
